Terms & Definitions

While many of our visitors know more about the BDSM Lifestyle than we will ever know, others are relatively new to this community and are eager to learn more and more about what it all means.

This area is designed to give more information about the lifestyle through some high level definitions and through links to very informative sites or online forums.  The best way to learn about the lifestyle is to converse with others and not be afraid to ask some of the more embarrassing questions.  Everyone was once new to this and are generally very interested in helping out.

One great place to meet people and learn about the lifestyle is right on Yahoo!  There are a number of terrific groups dedicated to BDSM and the great people in this community.

BDSM - Another common catch-all term that has much the same use as WIITWD. It stands for Bondage & Discipline, Dominance & Submission, Sadism & Masochism.


BONDAGE - The practice of restraining your victim.


CANES - Long, thin rods with straight handles.


CBT - This is an acronym for COCK AND BALL TORTURE.


COLLAR - A neck piece resembling a dog collar. Frequently they have a lock on the back and D-RINGS for attaching a leash.


CROPS - A whip with a hard shaft and a flat piece of leather at the end. Generally the leather piece is used to make contact, not the shaft.


CUFFS - Most often leather bracelets worn on the ankles and wrists, with D-RINGS on them so they can be hooked or chained together.


DISCIPLINE - DISCIPLINE can be a synonym for following a your TRAINING or it can be used to reference what happens to you when you are a bad and receive punishment.


DOMINANCE - In the sense that one has been given some measure of control by the submissive person. The level of control varies on an completely individual basis.


DOMINANT (also: Dom, Domme) - One who derives emotional and/or erotic satisfaction from a partner’s surrender of control. Additionally may be referred to as: Master, Mistress, Sir, Ma’am, Lady, Lord, Prince, Princess.


DUNGEON (also: PLAYSPACE, PLAYROOM) - A dungeon is any place specifically designated for PLAY and where equipment specifically used for the purpose of play is kept.


ENGLISH - A euphemism referring to play involving CANES or CROPS.


EXHIBITIONIST - Someone for whom exhibition is a big turn-on.


FETISH - A sexual fixation on a particular object, activity, scenario, etc. The clinical definition denotes something that must be present to achieve orgasm but this term is often used simply to define a preference.


FLOGGER, CAT-O’NINE-TAILS - A catchall term that includes any multi-thonged whip (a whip with more than one "tail" on it).


GAGS - A device used to cover the mouth or insert into the mouth to prevent speech.


GREEK - A euphemism for anal sex.


HOODS - In addition to using a hood to prevent seeing, some hoods are designed to prevent hearing as well.


LEATHER - Besides a great material, this term is also used as a general adjective for the community e.g., LEATHER COMMUNITY, LEATHERFOLK.


LIFESTYLER - Someone whose DOMINANT/SUBMISSIVE inclinations and interactions extend beyond the bedroom or dungeon and into their daily lives.


LIMIT - Those things that a submissive can’t or won’t do.


MASOCHIST- A person who receives pleasure from receiving a sadist’s ministrations.


MUNCH - A social gathering for like minded people who wish to meet and socialize only.


PADDLES - Usually made of wood or leather, a paddle has a handle with a flat area for proper spanking.


PLAYPARTY - A social gathering where people gather for the purpose of socializing and PLAYING.


S & M - Besides being a general term to identify the lifestyle this term can also be used to denote the physical activity of giving and receiving pain.


SADIST - A person who receives erotic pleasure from the application of pain.


SAFEWORD - A code word that stops the play immediately.


SERVICE-ORIENTED - A SUBMISSIVE who gets deep satisfaction from rendering service to a dominant, such as making their coffee, giving foot massages, etc.


SPANKING HORSE (also: SPANKING BENCH) - Resembling a sawhorse, usually padded and upholstered with leather, and with some kind of crosspiece added for leg-stability. Often there are hooks added as well so that the victim can be bound or hooked to it.


SSC - An acronym for "Safe, Sane, Consensual".


SUBMISSION - Submission involves the yielding of some level of power or control by the submissive to the dominant.


SUBMISSIVE (also: SUB, SUBBIE) - One who derives emotional and/or erotic satisfaction from surrendering some level of control to a dominant. Additionally may be referred to as: Slave, Boy, Girl, Slaveboy, Slavegirl, Pet.


SWITCH - Someone who can be both; a MASOCHIST and a SADIST or a SUBMISSIVE and a DOMINANT.


TRAINING - The progress of a DOMINANT teaching a SUBMISSIVE how to act or behave.


VANILLA - A person who doesn’t do PLAY in a lifestyle fashion. It can be used as a noun e.g., "My last girlfriend was a vanilla" or as an adjective e.g.,"We had vanilla sex yesterday".


WIITWD - An acronym that stands for "what it is that we do". Due to the complexities of this lifestyle it is in very common use as a non-specific term for lifestyle activities.


X-FRAME (also: St. Andrews Cross) - Pretty much what it sounds like. It is a large piece of furniture that is x-shaped, sometimes with a wooden base, sometimes just nailed or otherwise fastened to a wall. The SUBMISSIVE/BOTTOM can then be stood up against it and bound to it through the conveniently placed eyebolts in the appropriate places.
